Canon Cine-Servo 17-120mm T2.95-3.9 lens released – new features and RF mount

Canon just released CN7x17 KAS T/R1 and T/P1 lenses, The new model of their Cine-Servo lenses features several upgrades: new detachable servo drive unit, new native RF mount, enhanced PL mount, metadata output to support virtual production, and more. Let’s take a closer look.

Canon CN7x17 KAS T/R1 and T/P1 is a 17-120mm T2.95 cine servo lens, which belongs to the Canon CINE-SERVO series. It is designed for handheld professional film and broadcast production and is compatible with cinema cameras with sensors up to Super 35mm (26.2×13.8mm). This lens has most of the features of the CN7x17 KAS S released in April 2014.

However, so far, this lens is only available with PL or EF mounts. Now, they’ve introduced an updated model that brings some new features, additional options for PL mounts, and adds an RF mount.

Lens body and features

The lens features a 17-120mm focal length and 7x zoom capability, making it a versatile tool for a variety of shooting situations. The 11-blade aperture produces smooth, rounded bokeh and minimizes lens flare. For ENG style shooters, the lens drive uses servo motors to control zoom, focus and aperture functions. There’s a large 180-degree focus ring for precise manual focus and instant activation.

The diagonal view covers the Super35 wide viewing angle (87.2° to 14.1°) and supports 12-pin serial communication (the standard protocol for broadcast camera systems). Additionally, when used with Sony cameras, it offers ARIA (Automatic Recovery of Illumination Attenuation) peripheral lighting correction, effectively solving light attenuation issues and keeping exposure consistent across the frame.

Canon CN7x17 KAS T/R1 – RF installation upgrade

The camera’s RF adapter introduces an advanced communication protocol between the lens and the camera (such as the new EOS C400). It also supports virtual production metadata output. It integrates Cinema EOS camera features including Dual Pixel CMOS AF/AF II, peripheral illumination and chromatic aberration correction, and Dual Pixel focus guide. In addition, it displays and records lens information.

Canon CN7x17 KAS T/P1 – PL mount function

In addition to supporting Cooke/i technology, the PL mount now also supports eXtended Data (an extension of the Cooke/i technology communication standard provided by Zeiss). Connecting a compatible camera enables instant lens information output, recording and correction.

New servo drive unit

This new unit is based on the e-XsV drive unit, which provides significantly faster focus and aperture control, as well as focus breathing compensation to ensure image consistency during zooming. The USB-C connector is also used for remote shooting, import/export of user settings, services/accessibility, and firmware updates (PL installations only). There are angled connectors on the back so the camera sits flat even with the 20-pin cable connected. The unit also features a display that provides access to key settings.

Price and availability

The Canon CN7x17 KAS T/R1 and T/P1 17-120mm lenses will begin shipping in October 2024 and are expected to retail for $23,850.00, which is close to the original price of the lenses.
