AI-driven servo tuning ‘better than human experts’

Panasonic Industrial Co. has announced the launch of a servo drive system that uses artificial intelligence to achieve precise adjustments that it says are better than those of human experts. It also says the Minas A7 servo system delivers the industry’s best motion performance, with 27-bit encoder resolution (equivalent to 134,217,728 pulses) and an industry-high response frequency of 4kHz or higher (1.25 higher than Panasonic’s earlier Minas A6 times) servo motor).

Panasonic said conventional auto-tuning technology has not yet achieved satisfactory results for applications requiring ultra-precise positioning, such as semiconductor manufacturing and surface mount machines. As a result, these require complex manual adjustments of many parameters by expert engineers, sometimes taking days to complete.


The new drive uses the industry’s first commercialized artificial intelligence-equipped servo tuner, called Precision Tuning, to reduce position settling time (a performance metric) by 45% and reduce tuning time by 90% compared to human results Or more. This technology allows users to achieve superior positioning performance through simple initial settings.

The 27-bit encoder resolution of the new servo drive will help improve the positioning and processing accuracy of the equipment. The servo motor has a maximum speed of 7,150 rpm, making the machine faster and helping to reduce cycle times.

Usually, servo motors need to run complex control programs on equipment such as PLC. The direct feedback (displacement control) amplifier in the new system is said to improve responsiveness from sensor input to motor output, with the amplifier capturing sensor data directly without going through a controller. Panasonic said that precise, high-speed control can be achieved without complex control programs and will shorten development time.

Initially, these drives will be available in 200W or 400W versions, with additional ratings planned for release later. There are currently single-phase 100V AC and single-phase/three-phase 200V AC versions, and a three-phase 400V AC model is under development.

Models are available for EtherCat or Panasonic’s Rtex (Real Time Express) communication technology. Versions are planned to support analog, burst and Modbus communications.

In addition to electronic applications, other potential uses include machine tools and industrial robots. Panasonic Industrial said it will provide application-specific servo amplifiers in the future for use in precision gantry control and direct sensor feedback (pressure control) products.

The new drives will be manufactured in Japan and China.
