Motion control specialist Aerotech has launched two new digital PWM drivers. Ultra-thin single-axis and multi-axis servo motor drives are designed for use with Aerotech’s Automation1 platform and are less expensive than Aerotech’s high-performance drives. Both single- and dual-axis versions are available, either as a standalone motion controller or as part of a PC-based configuration with I/O expansion options. A four-axis version will be launched later this year, along with I/O expansion and DC motor power input for the entire range.

“With the new XA4 driver series, we are creating a mini-revolution in the PWM driver and motion controller market,” said Simon Smith, European Director. “Never before has such outstanding performance been available at a relatively low price. We are opening the market to other industries and showing them how to benefit from high-precision automation solutions.

The new drives are available in one-, two- and soon four-axis versions. They are part of the user-friendly Automation1 motion control platform. Automation1 has many amplifier options that can be configured to meet the required application and controller performance. The platform has its own software-based motion controller, providing a high degree of flexibility while allowing easy control of positioning solutions and other connected components. Application areas include automation systems, precision laser processing, and testing and inspection processes.

“Our ultra-thin single- and dual-axis servo motor drives provide users with precise, powerful control of multiple axes of motion in the same machine,” Smith said, explaining some of the benefits. “iXA4 also reduces the space required on the machine and eliminates the need for an industrial PC.”

Communication with Automation1, PC and driver-based control elements occurs through the Automation1 platform’s patented HyperWire motion controller. As a driver, iXA4 supports multiple feedback device types and also features onboard memory for high-speed data acquisition and process control. The integrated Automation1 controller can be used to control a total of 12 HyperWire motion axes and perform up to 9 user tasks.

Smith concludes: “Combined with our motion control platform Automation1, users can achieve the highest levels of accuracy and performance while enjoying advanced configuration tools and ease of use. This in turn means less time for their products development and build time, and can also produce higher quality parts at higher volumes.
