Information technology in manufacturing

Mitec Enginy is a young and dynamic automation integrator based in Northern Spain that develops complex and powerful masterpieces of production technology. The core component is a revolutionary motion control system with a total of 67 servo axes synchronized through the cam function. The result is a production line that can feed wire, cut and bend the wire, produce springs and mass-produce the final product – mousetraps – in just 1.5 seconds. In addition to servo drive technology, Beckhoff also provides the required control performance via the CX2062 Embedded PC and TwinCAT software.

Since 2006, Mitec Enginy has been developing and integrating application-specific automation systems for customers around the world. Comprehensive solutions.

Servo drive technology replaces machinery

“Looking back at the history of automation, it is necessary to recognize the foundations that are taken for granted today,” points out General Manager Albert Gratacos. “Eighty years ago, mechanically driven machines were commonplace, often driven by motors and connected by gears, crankshafts and cams. These inventions still drive our innovation today, but these machines predated 3D CAD, CNC machining and software. Exploit With today’s technology, mechanical machine components are replaced by multi-axis servo motion and controlled via software for more reliable and flexible control.

The latest Mousetrap project accurately reflects this, as Gratacos describes it: “Customers needed to modernize product manufacturing to stay competitive, so we designed a proper way to do it. At first, Precision The idea of synchronizing around 70 servo axes sounded almost crazy, but it turned out to be the right solution for complex process sequences, and we were able to implement it using PC-based control from Beckhoff.

A CX2062 embedded PC serves as the central controller, along with 61 AX51xx and AX52xx servo drives and 67 AM80xx servo motors. On the software side, TwinCAT 3 with cam function (TF5050 TwinCAT 3 NC Camming) ensures precisely synchronized motion sequences. In addition, all necessary safety functions (STO, SOS, SS1 and SS2) are implemented directly in the automation system via TwinSAFE and Safety over EtherCAT. Lluis Moreno, sales engineer at Beckhoff Spain, added: “This is a very advanced machine that uses the latest automation technology. It is fully equipped with powerful servo drive technology networked via EtherCAT and requires only a computer to communicate with it. The CX2062 coordinates reliably.

Complex solutions require strong teams

Gratacos said Mitec Enginy’s success can also be attributed to the team created to develop complex automation solutions. “We are responsible for all mechanical and electrical design, programming and assembly of the in-house automation. At the same time, we also realize that no one person can be an expert on the entire automation system, which is why we have mechanical, electrical and programming experts working closely together to develop Innovative automation solutions. But the team at Mitec Enginy is not limited to our employees; we also consider customers and suppliers like Beckhoff to be project partners and part of the Mitec team.

Moreno also confirms the importance of close and trusting cooperation: “Mitec Enginy is a long-term partner of Beckhoff Spain and we have implemented many very different and complex customer projects with them – often in a very specific way. But I cannot Without admitting, the current production line is by design the most efficient and aesthetically pleasing machine ever made. Each of the many movements is so fast, precise and smooth that no unnecessary stress is transmitted to the machine’s mechanics. .

Responding to manufacturing disruption

Editor recommends manufacturing IT field

When considering IT in manufacturing, there are two basic assumptions: first, a wave of valuable mature technologies can be leveraged to create new business value; second, the environment in which these technologies are applied will be relatively predictable and change will occur as changes with the passage of time. However, recent disturbances have shattered these assumptions.
