Trio Motion Technology – New multi-axis servo drive delivers up to 750W of performance control

Trio Motion Technology has launched a multi-axis servo drive that provides precise motion coordination for low-power machines with limited space and up to 750W.

Designed for machine builders requiring multi-axis EtherCAT performance control, the new DX5 servo drives are cost-effective and feature zero stacking clearance and compact size for a small footprint.

The DX5 multi-axis servo drive is designed for OEM machines for laser, plasma or water cutting applications between 2 and 16 axes. Multi-axis drives are also suitable for packaging machines with lower power requirements, including form fill seal and labeling applications.

Motion control performance in a compact space

Multi-axis synchronization includes EtherCAT control performance as low as 250μs with pulse duty cycle overload of 350%. The DX5 multi-axis servo drive also supports 20-bit single-turn or 23-bit multi-turn absolute encoders. These motion performance features enable high speed and precise control by optimizing multi-axis coordination throughout the machine, thereby increasing throughput and achieving the highest production quality.

This compact multi-axis servo drive is designed as a space-saving two-axis module and is available in 750W and 400W frame sizes. Zero stacking clearance minimizes floor space when adding up to 8 axes at 750W or 16 axes at 400W. Single and dual axis modules measure 40mm wide x 205mm high x 203mm deep. The 750W’s full eight-axis extends the width to just 240mm (including power stage), while the 400W’s full 16-axis only extends the width to 400mm (including power stage). These compact dimensions make the DX5 one of the smallest multi-axis servo systems available. The 750W driver supports 750W and 400W servo motors, and the 400W driver supports 400W, 200W and 100W servo motors.

Designed to save energy and costs

The DX5 multi-axis servo drive is also highly energy efficient, resulting in cost savings for the end user over the entire life cycle of the machine thanks to the integrated DC bus regenerative energy system. The DC bus absorbs motor braking energy and reuses it on the machine’s axis. The system reduces costs for machine users and contributes to their environmental commitment.

Cost savings can also be achieved by removing I/O from individual drive axes and consolidating functionality into the motion coordinator. This approach achieves one of the lowest costs per axis, achieving 750W requirements between 2 and 8 axes, or 16 axes at 400W.

Reliable multi-axis synchronization and rapid development

Plug-and-play functionality is achieved through matching servo motors (low-inertia, high-speed Trio MXL). Trio’s free-to-download, easy-to-use Motion Perfect PC tool enables fast, automated configuration, while seamless integration with Trio controllers ensures trouble-free machine setup. Optimized motor, drive and controller compatibility provides end users with long-term reliability, increasing machine productivity by minimizing downtime.

Trio controllers can be quickly programmed for multi-axis synchronization with a choice of IEC 61131-3 languages, PLCopen and Trio’s intuitive text-based Motion-iX language. If desired, additional control functions can be added via Trio’s Flexslice I/O system by simply snapping individual modules into place.
