Harmonic Drive adds RSF-5 microactuator with integrated servo drive

Harmonic Drive announces the launch of its new RSF-5 microactuator with integrated servo drive. This revolutionary product eliminates the need for external drives and greatly simplifies wiring, while maintaining high positional accuracy and torsional stiffness in a compact housing.

The RSF Mini and Supermini series are compact actuator families that deliver high torque, exceptional accuracy and repeatability. As part of the RSF Supermini series, an integrated servo drive version with CANopen communication is now available. Since it communicates via CANopen, only 4 wires are needed: CANH, CANL, +24VDC, 0VDC. Integrated single-turn 14-bit (16384 cpr) gear output sensing encoder.

Harmonic drive RSF-5Harmonic’s U.S.-based engineering team packed even more features and functionality into the actuator while maintaining compact size and low quality.

The following are the main features of RSF-5:

  • Actuator + integrated servo drive, using CANopen communication compliant with DS402 and DS301
  • 24VDC nominal +7 to 30VDC supply voltage range
  • Single-axis BLDC motor controller/driver with CAN and TTL-UART interfaces
  • Field Oriented Control
  • Single cable with only 4 conductors: CANH, CANL, +24VDC, 0VDC
  • zero gap
  • Pigtail connector with 2 outlet options
  • 14bit (16384 cpr) resolution motor encoder
  • Control modes include torque, speed and position control, CSP, CSV, CST
  • Harmonic Drive HDL software for initial adjustment, commissioning and analysis
  • Homing modes include: single-ended, dual-ended, double-ended with 16-bit auto-scaling, hard-stop homing or teachable position

The RSF-5B-IDT microactuator joins the recently released FHA-Mini family of integrated actuators.

Harmonic Drive was awarded the 2020 RBR50 Innovation Award for the opening of its purpose-built headquarters and manufacturing facility in Beverly, Massachusetts, in January 2020. The space is also optimized for gear production and parts flow.

The facility is more than twice the size of the location it replaced. Company representatives said the new factory will increase its manufacturing capabilities by hundreds of percent, in part because of expected strong growth in the robotics industry. They also noted that the state-of-the-art factory will allow Harmonic Drive to manufacture more efficiently, thereby increasing production capacity and reducing overall costs.
