Omron launches 1S series AC servo system*1 with PLe/SIL3 safety function, providing the highest level of safety


Omron Corporation (Headquarters: Shimogyo-ku, Kyoto. President and CEO: Yoshihito Yamada) announced the global release of the new 1S series AC servo system with safety functions in December. The 1S series adds new models to help achieve safer manufacturing environments and higher productivity in digital, food, pharmaceutical, cosmetics and other industries.

While manufacturing labor is hard to come by today, coordination between humans and machines is accelerating and there is a growing need to improve the productivity and safety of manufacturing equipment. Due to short product life cycles, manufacturers are under pressure to quickly set up manufacturing equipment. However, they also present engineering difficulties, as setting up safety equipment requires skilled equipment designers as well as software packages for safety design and motion design. In addition, robots using communication servos are increasingly used to maintain social distance between workers as a preventive measure against infections, including COVID-19. Workers now need to work in harmony with machines and safely.

The new AC servo system with safety features provides eight safety functions to operate the machine safely. All functions are PLe/SIL3*2 compliant, providing the highest level of safety to protect operators, machinery and products while increasing the productivity of production equipment. For example, in the event of an emergency stop, the synchronous motor decelerates to a stop and monitors the standstill state to avoid product and mechanical failures and smoothly restart the production equipment. In addition, combined with the automation software Sysmac Studio, it provides an integrated development environment from design to debugging, making programming easier. The software helps improve device performance and optimize debugging tasks. In production workshops where people and machines work together, machines run at safe speeds in the machine working area in response to the approach of people, ensuring the safety of operators while improving production efficiency.

Omron has proposed the strategic concept of “innovative automation”, which consists of three innovations or “i”: “integration” (controlling evolution), “wisdom” (developing wisdom through ICT) and “interaction” (new harmony between people) composition.     Advanced motion safety features enable machines to keep running, improving maintenance and changeover efficiency while protecting operator, product and machine safety.

  3. Debugging is more efficient
    The automation software Sysmac Studio enables the sequential design and simulation of standard and safety controls. Debugging time for servo systems and safety systems can be reduced by approximately 35%*3.
  4. Flexible device design
    The cable connecting the servo drive and servo motor uses One Cable technology. Power supply, encoder and brake are integrated into a pre-assembled cable. The rotary connector of the servo motor allows the cable exit direction to be changed. These features increase design flexibility by helping to connect and disconnect cables during equipment layout changes and maintenance.
