With the Sinamics S210 frequency converter, designed for use with the newly developed Simotics S-1FK2 motor, Siemens offers a new innovative servo drive system with an initial power range of 50-750 watts. The converter has integrated safety functions and enables rapid engineering with motion technology objects in the Simatic S7-1500 controller. They are connected to higher-level controllers via Profinet and can be programmed quickly and easily via automatic motor parameterization and one-touch tuning. Typical uses for this new drive system include packaging machines, handling applications such as picking, wood and plastic processing, as well as life sciences and digital printing.

“Sinamics S210 focuses on highly dynamic motor axis control, while a connected controller, such as the Simatic S7-1500 or S7-1500T with extended motion control capabilities, is fully responsible for the positioning function of the connected drive axis,” Craig Nelson, Sinamics S Series Drive Product Manager.

Sinamics S210 uses an integrated web server for debugging. The one-touch adjustment function automatically optimizes the control parameters, taking into account the behavior of the connected machinery at different dynamic levels.

Integrated safety functions include STO (Safe Torque Off) and SS1 (Safe Stop 1). Both can be started using Profisafe, STO and terminal. Other features are currently in preparation. Combined with the fast sampling and intelligent control algorithms of Sinamics S210, the advanced encoder system on the Simotics 1FK2 motor, and the combination of low rotor inertia and high overload capability, the servo motor is able to achieve excellent dynamic performance and accuracy.

The Simotics 1FK2 motor is connected to the converter using an “One Cable Connection” (OCC), which includes the power cable, encoder signal and brake, all combined in an ultra-thin cable with a diameter of only 9 mm. Its minimal cross-section makes OCC cables thinner, lighter and more flexible than previous power cords, greatly simplifying the wiring process. This results in a single motor plug connector and connections on the converter are as simple as a user-friendly plug with push-on terminals on the front.
